I am so sorry for the Goldin family, and for every family in Israel that has lost a son, brother, husband...The truth is that Israel was sieging Gaza until the Biden administration stepped in and demanded they stop. So no, they are not wrong to demand that aide be withheld until the living and the dead are returned. The US just would not let Israel fight this war, the way they would fight it.

Israel fights a demonic enemy that not only wants to kill , but to cause you as much pain as possible. That is why they take the dead bodies back to Gaza, or in the case of Hezbollah back to Lebanon. It is sick really in a severely psychotic way. That the world "powers" refuse to acknowledge this is at their own peril. But the leaders of the world are too myrd in their own antisemitism to see how this arena is actually going to be their own future if they don't properly support Israel.

But the ultimate question I do ask: do you risk the living to retrieve the dead?

What is incredible about the Goldin's is that they never asked for that.

They said something simple - create a situation where holding hostages (alive or not) is a liability and not an asset.

That is not an easy thing to do - but it would be nice if we tried.

The first hostage deal was, I think, just that. They felt that holding women and children was a liability for them so they tried to get what they could for them. Now - for many reasons, the hostages are assets to them.

I wasn’t referring to the Goldin family. Their dignity is unquestioned. I was referring to your discussion of what this means to leave behind the dead.

Unfortunately, because the Biden administration will negotiate for the release of hostages it does behoove Sinwar to keep them to extract as many concessions that he can get.

This article took my breathe away. Beautifully written. Just heartbreaking. Excellently put. What absolutely devastating consequences. Thank you for writing this.

Can you explain this, for those of us who don't know the background, a little further?

"The Goldin’s have for the past ten years withstood the pressure to keep quiet and withstood the pressure to demand that the country release terrorists in exchange for their son."

It just isn't clear to me. It sounds like they do not believe in exchanging terrorists but I want to be sure.

Anyone who bothers Amos Schocken is a Good Person in my book.

They have never been in favor of exchanging terrorists for their son. They have been in favor of making the holding of him (and other hostages, alive or not) a liability and not an asset.

They opposed the giving of Qatari money, the return of terrorists (there are hundreds that have been quietly freed and returned to Gaza in the last ten years as they "served their sentences").

Basically they said - we will provide you with humanitarian help when you provide some humanitarian help - free their son, the other soldier being held and two live civilians.

Thank you for this clarification. They sound like awesome people. Of course that's why Schocken hates them.
