Taking cynicism to an even higher level, Yigal Carmon of MEMRI thinks the whole thing was a staged show, pre-cleared by the US so that Iran could save face. It fits in with what the Scroll article said, but takes it a bit further - at least, that's what it sounds like to me.
PS - reading both, it seems to me that the initial attack was pre-cleared, but the Iranians went too far, so the US OK'd this response.
But Carmon seems to be saying something different-I can't figure it out.
What do you think? At this point, I don't know what to think! (Read the whole thing)
I don't know what to think either. All my life when I've rejected things like this (for example, the manipulation in the run up to the Iraq war) I said to myself, "You weren't cynical enough." The manipulativeness and deceitfulness of the people in power is so breathtaking.
Some of it coincides with/dovetails with the Tablet/Scroll article.
Yet it still strikes me as a bridge too far, as they say.
We agree that some kind of high-level footsie is going on with the Iranians and it's got to stop. That much is absolutely true. This regime is made up of evil fanatics. No question about that.
"On Sunday, meanwhile, Reuters offered further confirmation that Washington had approved the Iranian attack, via a Turkish official who said that Tehran had shared details of its operation with Ankara, which shared them with the Biden administration. The Americans responded, according to the Turks, by conveying to the Iranians that their “reaction must be within certain limits.”
I have read of Iran warning Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, the US directly and now Turkey - i am sure there were messages passed back and forth but my feeling is that this is classic disinformation claiming that the Iranian attack never meant any harm and was just to save face - meaning that Israel can "take the win" and ignore it.
Iran clearly wanted a "win" themselves - they failed and now they must pay the price.
Of course if it is true - it would not surprise anyone. But at this point you have to look at the purpose of the leaks. And the current purpose is to restrain Israel.
You're more sophisticated than the guy who writes Tablet's blog, and that's no joke. He simply reported it as a fact.
So....
Which country would be doing the leaking? I don't mean names. I mean, is this coming from Washington, and if so, how does the US benefit from this? Of course Iran benefits, but the US?
Yigal Carmon's article isn't based on leaks, by the way, it's based on deductive reasoning. Maybe screwy reasoning, but still.
I think it's important to nail this down. Did DC approve this attack (even a lesser version) or did they not? If so it would be the biggest scandal in US history. Let's not go too down the rabbit hole of power politics--let's return to simple principles. If the US approved an attack on Israel it would be the biggest scandal in US history. Oh, I already said that.
I agree with you on your last point. It would not surprise me but I just don't think it happened because I think Iran wanted to do great harm to Israel. The divisions in Israel are returning and many here think that Iran was sure it was perfect timing.
As an example of the disgust the Davos left has for Netanyahu - one of the leading "activists" was asked on live tv (or radio, don't remember) if releasing all the hostages unharmed but Netanyahu stays in power - would he agree to that? The guy couldn't say "yes" - and at the time he was working for some of the families of hostages.
As for who gains from the "rumor"? In their own mind Biden-Blinken gain because they don't see betrayal of an ally - they see convincing Israel not to attack Iran.
This is all too similar to when Hezbollah strikes open fields or Israel hits empty buildings. It's a show for their respective constituencies. With respect to the Iranian attack, perhaps it too was not what most of the world thought it was.
Could be too early to be optimistic, I sense it was more of a test and following the leftist Islamic version news they're celebrating it as the biggest attack ever, I think that they shut down the airports and stuff in Israel is significant, if they can send a bunch of paper airplanes again and again then eventually people will become immune to it and then boom boom, but good analysis , there is reason to be optimistic
Not to worry. But a "sovereign country" is a Western concept that has very little relevance in the mideast. It is a tribal region as we can see by what is happening in Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Algeria, Sudan and other countries.
Egypt still holds annual parades in celebration of their Yom Kippur War "victory".
Hezbollah believes they defeated Israel in their 2006 War.
There's a different mindset in the Middle East that Westerners fail to comprehend.
the mideast is the granddad of conspiracy theories and legends. They are the ultimate post-modernists where narrative trumps all.

I don't even know what to say after reading that. If true, then this whole thing is a game and we are paying the price. Who is against whom here?
Whatever is going on ... this will NOT end well. The entire West needs to stop playing these games. The entire West needs new leadership.

Ira, Washington approved the attack. Let's chew on this.

Who knows anymore ?
This is all too similar to when Hezbollah strikes open fields or Israel hits empty buildings. It's a show for their respective constituencies. With respect to the Iranian attack, perhaps it too was not what most of the world thought it was.
I don't agree. Hezbollah attacks houses, military installations and people! The border down of Metulla has 140 damaged homes.
Israel has been attacking Hezbollah military installations as well as hitting their commanders.
Yes, they have caused damage & death.
But there are times when they've indicated they deliberately struck open fields.

Not sure how optimistic I am ... but there are opportunities to degrade Iran's military. Let's hope those opportunities are taken.
Iraq fired Scuds at Israel in 1991.
Israel was prevented then too from responding militarily.
