Egypt? Already? We’re just getting used to Syria! I suppose Israel could offer some sub rosa assistance to Al Sisi; Islamists already blame their enemies for being in Israel’s pocket. As for the US, what threats, really, could President Trump bring to bear on Erdogan? He seems to be feeling his oats, these days. For that matter, what can Trump do to reign in Qatar (which David Goldman refers to as “a gas pimple”). Might the best course for Western powers (among whom one must number Israel) to try to pit one antagonist against another, as in Kissinger’s famous remark (Can’t they both lose?)? I do hope Iran can be “finished off” –that would reduce pressure overall, no? It’s all too much to think about for a Christmas Eve.

I hope you’re not losing too much sleep over Ireland’s anti-Israel stance.

Perhaps this is why the US (and Israel to a certain extent) have always refrained from a military assault against Iran. They want to ensure that the Islamic Republic remains a counter-weight to the Sunni powers.

The US for sure. As a counterweight also against Israel.

As for Israel- not sure.

Perhaps the adults are being prepared, waiting in the wings, to be brought forth in the coming times of crises. "He that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep."
